The 2024 International Roadcheck (more commonly known as DOT Blitz 2024) entails major truck inspections and enforcement efforts. Schedule III

Once the DEA has received the scientific and medical evaluation from HHS, the DEA Administrator evaluates all available data and makes a final decision whether to propose that a drug or other substance be controlled and into which schedule it should be placed. Under certain circumstances, the Government may temporarily schedule[25] a drug without following the normal procedure. Some examples of Schedule II medications are amphetamines, codeine, fentanyl, methadone, morphine, and oxycodone.

The Global Information System on Alcohol and Health (GISAH) has been developed by WHO to dynamically present data on levels and patterns of alcohol consumption, alcohol-attributable health and social consequences and policy responses at all levels. Individual states determine whether and how it’s imported, distributed, and sold, as well as who can possess it. These are not comprehensive lists so please note that a substance need not be listed as a controlled substance to be treated as a scheduled substance for criminal prosecution.

Due to its adverse effects, health risks and other public concerns have generated detailed federal and state regulation of the sale, possession, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. While federal law, through the 18th amendment, previously preempted most state laws on alcohol, the later passage of the 21st amendment means that alcohol regulation is primarily a state law issue. I am not arguing for the DEA to add alcohol and tobacco to its list of controlled substances. On the contrary, I am calling for the DEA to remove a much less harmful—and more medicinally useful—product from that list.

Some countries may also have different regulations for specific drugs based on their unique properties and effects. In the United States, alcohol is not a controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The federal government, through agencies like the DEA, classifies drugs into schedules based on their potential for misuse, medical use, and safety. However, states also have the authority to regulate and classify drugs, leading to instances where state and federal classifications may differ. Schedule 4 drugs in the United States are substances with a lower potential for misuse compared to those in Schedules 1–3. They have a currently accepted medical use and a lower risk of physical or psychological dependence than Schedule 3 drugs.

The current list of controlled substances can be found in section 1308 of the most recent issue of Title 21 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1300 to end (21 CFR §1308) and the final rules which were published in the Federal Register subsequent to the issuance of the CFR. These have the advantage of clearly defining alcohol use disorder what is controlled, making prosecutions easier and compliance by legitimate companies simpler. However the downside is that these tend to be harder to understand for non-chemists and also give those wishing to supply for illegitimate reasons something to ‘aim’ for in terms of non-controlled chemical space.

This means that these substances can be accepted for medical use under “restricted” circumstances unlike Schedule I substances. Methamphetamine, Morphine, Cocaine, Adderall, Ritalin, and Dexedrine, among others, fall in this category. Federal and state drug laws coexist in the United States, creating a complex legal landscape.
